Bed bugs are cold blooded insect, temperature has a major effect on life cycle development, at 80 degrees Fahrenheit it takes about 1 month for a bed bug to grow from egg to an adult and at 64 degrees Fahrenheit it takes about 4 months for a bed bug to grow from egg to an adult.
On an average of 70 degrees bed bugs usually take around 6 weeks to reach sexual maturity.
After they hatch from an egg, they have 5 stages of growth before they reach adulthood. Juvenile bed bug is called a nymph, in all 5 stages of nymph they feed on blood and molt in between, molting is a process of releasing hormones that softens the exoskeleton and helps in shedding. After these 5 stages of nymph, bed bugs reach sexual maturity, they mate and the female lay eggs after 3-6 days of mating.
Lifetime of a bed bug ranges from 6-18 months and this lifetime a female can lay around 200-500 eggs. Eggs are mostly laid in clusters. Eggs are very difficult to kill even with professional insecticides. Eggs take around 7-10 days to hatch. So a treatment after hatching is also advised.
Bedbugs prefer laying eggs on textured materials like Fabrics, Wood, Furniture etc. and population could build very quickly at an exponential rate if you don’t detect early.
Bed bugs are nocturnal and best way to detect bed bug is by searching in the night near the host where heat and CO2 is dissipated. Bed bugs only feed on blood and contain a saliva a anti coagulant and anesthetic that soften the blood and helps in sucking through their tube. For many humans this causes a skin reaction but there is no evidence of bed bugs transmitting any dangerous disease. The feeding process usually takes about 5-15 minutes.
You cannot eliminate bed bugs by leaving the location as bed bugs can almost live for a year without feeding and can also travel around 60 feet in search of food. The best way to get rid of them is by treating them consistently until you get rid of eggs, nymphs and adult bed bugs.
Bed bugs also have high resistance and tolerance to normal insecticides, using professional products targeted specifically for bed bugs is advised.
It is important to treat bed bugs infestation every month or once in every quarter to make sure eggs, nymphs and adult bed bugs are completely exterminated.
