West Nile Virus is a single-stranded RNA virus that is transmitted through mosquitos that can cause West Nile Fever in humans. The first case of West Nile Virus was confirmed in USA in 1999 and since then it has been a leading cause of mosquito borne diseases every year. Birds are usually the hosts of this Virus, West Nile Virus is active during mosquito season which start early summer and lasts till late fall.
In addition to fighting Coronavirus this year, a total of 10 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes to CDC.
WNV infections in mosquitoes, birds, sentinel animals, or veterinary animals have been reported to CDC ArboNET from the following states for 2020: California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Tennessee and Texas. West Nile virus infections in humans have been reported to CDC ArboNET from the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, and New Mexico.
According to CDC most people don’t develop any symptom when infected from West Nile Virus. 1 in 5 people infected may develop symptoms like fever, joint pain, diarrhea, headache or rash and usually lasts a few days and they recover completely. 1 in 150 people infected develop severe illness affecting their central nervous system and 1 in 10 people who develop severe illness die.
There are no vaccines or antiviral medications for this virus; only painkillers can relieve some of the symptoms. Thus, it is very important to take steps to prevent yourself and your family from mosquito bites, which may transmit dangerous diseases.
